Opuntia stricta

Opuntia Stricta, Pest Pear Opuntia stricta, Pest Pear is a relative of the more common Prickly Pear. It is found mostly on seashores in Florida, Australia and in Galveston Bay. This particular specimen was on a shell bank scheduled to be leveled as a part of regular road maintenance.

They were collected in the winter of 1995. Opuntia stricta is very tolerant of low soil moisture and hearty to temperatures in the low twenties (Farenheit.) This particular planting was for limiting the access of wandering dogs and has served quite effectively.

The fruits are edible but caution is required when harvesting as the thorns on the pad face and margins are very easily detached.
